Agent Skills Goes Neutral: Anthropic Donates the Standard to the Agentic AI Foundation

On October 22, Anthropic donated Agent Skills — the open standard for giving agents specialized knowledge and workflows — to the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF) under the Linux Foundation. It follows the same path as MCP: build in the open, then hand over governance.

The Numbers

  • 70+ agent platforms have integrated the standard since December 2025, including ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot and VS Code.
  • 1 million skills published; nearly 280 million installs.

What a Skill Actually Is

A folder with a SKILL.md file, plus any scripts or reference material the agent needs. That’s it. The simplicity is the point: any agent that can read a folder can load a skill.

Skills came out of Claude Code. The agent handled general knowledge work well but lacked the procedural knowledge real business tasks need. Within weeks of the October 2025 launch, developers had published thousands of skills on GitHub and written loaders for Codex, Cursor and OpenCode — which led Anthropic to publish it as a standalone open standard.

What Was Donated

  • The Agent Skills name and logo
  • The GitHub organization
  • The agentskills.io domain

You can use or contribute to the standard without joining the AAIF. Maintainers from Anthropic, Google, OpenAI and others serve as individuals, with David Soria Parra and Mahesh Murag as Lead Maintainers.

The Roadmap

  1. Versioned releases
  2. A formal proposal process
  3. Security guidance for people who write and install skills

Why It Matters

  • Vendor neutrality removes the adoption risk. Betting your team’s workflows on a single vendor’s format is a hard sell; a Linux Foundation project is not.
  • Security is the real open problem. A skill can ship scripts. With ~280M installs, supply-chain hygiene — vetting sources, reviewing scripts before install — becomes critical. Guidance is on the roadmap, but treat skills like any third-party dependency today.
  • MCP + Skills under one roof. MCP connects agents to tools and data; Skills teach them how to use those tools well. Both now live in the same foundation.

If you build agents, write your procedural knowledge as skills now: it’s portable across 70+ platforms and costs a folder and a markdown file.
